No Moustache, No Mullet, No Deal

According to my Facebook timeline this morning, the London Olympics closing ceremony was rocking. And apparently, Queen contributed to said rocking.

Hmmm. Strange.

I watched the closing ceremony and there were some good TV moments for sure but I didn’t see a live Queen performance.

What I did see was Brian May and Roger Taylor jamming with that skanky ho Jessie J, recorded footage of Freddie Mercury in that classic yellow jacket and an orchestral version of Bohemian Rhapsody. In what universe do those things amount to Queen rocking it? That’s right. No known universe as far as Queen fans are concerned.

Because Queen, despite what May and Taylor think, are not May and Taylor. Queen is not Jessie J screaming her way through the greatest participatory stomp-clap-stomp song of all time. And it’s not 5ive or Paul Rodgers or Adam Lambert or George Michael or a video screen standing in for the greatest frontman rock has ever known. And really, no pre-recorded bass loop could possibly take the place of John Deacon’s mullet and fluorescent shorts.

As a person who owns every single track the real band made, I wish May and Taylor would just retire the Queen moniker. It’s been 21 years since Freddie’s death. And 17 years since Made in Heaven. Enough’s enough.

Let’s just remember the band that was. And if May and Taylor want to keep playing together fine. I don’t even mind if they play Queen tunes. But gentlemen, please, no more calling yourselves Queen.

I found it strange that the majority of acts were acts from Universal

  2. Not strange really. Most of the acts were EMI acts pre 2008. EMI being British and owner of such labels as Virgin, Parlophone and Capitol was home to the greatest Brit artists of all-time.
