I have often thought to keep this blog free of politics and write solely about music and musicians. Yet, if I've learnt anything from the likes of Rage Against The Machine, Midnight Oil, The Clash, Marvin Gaye, Stevie and the rest of 'em, it's that you have to make a stand. You have to pick a side. You have to have the conviction to say: Yes, this is what I believe in.
Activists often talk about fear standing in the way of change. I think that's inaccurate. I think it's OK to be scared. In fact, I think it's important to be scared.
Being scared means you aren't blindly rushing in. Being scared means you're constantly weighing things in your head and heart. And most crucial of all, being scared makes you human.
The true enemy of change, reformation or whatever you want to call it isn't fear, it's apathy. Apathy is what will enslave us. Seal our fate. And lead to the eventual destruction of all we hold dear.
So tonight/this morning, as my brothers and sisters gather right now in the capital for Bersih 3.0, to seek a better tomorrow for your children and mine, I urge you, pick a side. And make a stand.
I'll see you on the street in a few hours.
